AP Credit: The Four Checks
AP
ACCDC counselor training · November 4, 2026

The chart is not the answer.

One AP score can mean four different things. Ask first, check all four, then write it down.

Family styleReal cases from BrittneeRecorded for adjunctsArticulation check: Nick Franco
Why we are here

Three problems Brittnee keeps seeing.

All from this fall. No names, no IDs.

Duplication. Students take RCCD courses their AP scores already covered. That is wasted time, money, and units.
Skipping ahead without the conversation. A prerequisite gets cleared with AP before anyone asks about the major, the transfer school, or grad and professional school plans.
Different counselors, different answers. One counselor keeps a student in a class. The next one has them withdraw.
3

is the number that gets students in trouble.

The gap, in one line

RCCD gives course credit at a 3. Most UC course equivalencies start at a 4, and the ones that matter for STEM often need a 5.

At Norco, a 3 earns

  • MATH C2210 (Calc AB)
  • CHE 2A or 3
  • ENGL C1000
  • ECON C2001 / C2002
  • PSYC C1000, POLS C1000

At most UCs, a 3 earns

  • Units toward admission
  • Entry-Level Writing (English)
  • Sometimes a placement or non-majors course
  • Usually no major prep

The big idea

One AP score. Four separate questions.

Example: Calculus AB, score 3, student wants UC Berkeley Neuroscience.

1
RCCD degree and RCCD GE
RCCD Catalog AP page, "RCCD AP Credit" tab
MATH C2210, 4 units, RCCD GE Area 2. yes
2
Transfer GE: Cal-GETC
Same page, "Cal-GETC AP Credit" tab (IGETC or CSU GE for students still on those patterns)
3 semester units, Area 2. yes
3
University admission
UC AP Credits, then the campus; CSU External Exam Credit
2.6 UC semester units toward admission. units only
4
Major prep at that campus
ASSIST major agreement, "Exam Credit" section; campus and college pages
Only Calc BC with a 5 satisfies Math 51. no

Yes to 1, 2, and 3 says nothing about 4.

Admission units are not major prep. Stopping at the main UC AP page is where most of our AP mistakes start.

The procedure

Ask first. Check all four. Then decide and document.

Ask
"Which AP exams did you take, and what scores?"
Confirm official scores are on file with Admissions and Records. Write down every exam, not just the one in question.
Ask
"Where might you transfer, and which college there?"
List every campus and college they name. Not sure yet? Run the checks for each one they are considering.
Ask
"What major? Any plans for med, PT, or grad school?"
Some professional schools do not accept AP for prerequisites. Have the student check that program's policy.
Look, then decide
Run checks 1 to 4 for each campus and major. Does the AP satisfy major prep at every target, at this score?
Yes, everywhere. Do not repeat the course. When an AP exam and a course duplicate each other, credit is awarded for only one.
No, or not sure. Take the course here. Do not clear the next prerequisite with AP. Hard case? Ask Nick.
Document in SARS and STRK

Davis

AP cannot satisfy GE, with one writing exception.

San Diego

GE credit depends on the college the student lands in. It is on a separate PDF.

Entering-year rules

UCR keys Computer Science and Calculus BC credit to the year the student entered; UCSB does the same for Computer Science. Watch re-admits.

Real case 1 · Duplication

Six AP exams. Six courses he did not need.

Kinesiology (pre-PT/OT), headed to Cal Poly Pomona. STEM student.

AP exam (score)Cal-GETC credit, per our catalog
English Literature (4)Area 1A or 3B
World History: Modern (4)Area 3B or 4
US History (4)Area 3B or 4, plus US-1
US Government (4)Area 4, plus US-2
Biology (5)Area 5B and 5C
Physics 1 (3)Area 5A and 5C

He still took two Area 3B and four Area 4 courses.

Six courses, 18 units, that his AP scores already covered. Meanwhile he was missing the specific Area 4 course his transfer program required. Map the AP credit first, then build the plan.

RCCD 2026-27 Catalog, "Cal-GETC AP Credit" tab. Catalog: "If an IB or AP exam duplicates a college course or vice versa, a student will be awarded credit for only one."

Real case 2 · Calculus AB, score 3

Four counseling contacts before anyone asked where he was going.

Contact 1 · drop-inFirst-time template, which has no transfer goal field. Note says "AP." Placement lists MATH C2210. No exams, scores, or goal. No math in the fall plan.
Contact 2 · drop-inStrongly encouraged MATH C2220 and ENGL C1003 for fall. No template. No major or transfer school. Not every exam and score listed.
Contact 3 · drop-inAP Chemistry prerequisite validation, which changed between the 2025-26 and 2026-27 catalogs. Plan updated to MATH C2220. No major or school.
Contact 4 · 1 hourFirst full appointment, after the drop deadline. The student names his goal: UC Berkeley, Neuroscience.

The question every check depends on came last.

By then the clean fix was gone. His options: take a W in MATH C2220, take MATH C2210 in winter, and repeat C2220 in spring. Or rethink applying to his first-choice school.

Real case 2 · Run the checks

Calculus AB, score 3, UC Berkeley Neuroscience

"I passed AP Calc, so I can start in Calc 2, right?"

Neuroscience is in Berkeley's College of Letters and Science.

1

RCCD: MATH C2210, 4 units, Area 2. credit

2

Cal-GETC: 3 units, Area 2. clears

3

Admission: 2.6 UC units. units only

4

ASSIST: only Calc BC with a 5 satisfies Math 51. not AB

Verdict: take MATH C2210 here, then C2220.

On ASSIST, Berkeley's Math 51 is our MATH C2210. Calc AB does not satisfy it at any score. Do not clear MATH C2220 with this AP score.

ASSIST 2026-27, Norco College to UC Berkeley, Neuroscience, B.A., Exam Credit: "AP Calc BC with a score of 5 satisfies Math 51."

Calculus AB vs BC

Tricky one · Environmental Science

AP Environmental Science, any passing score

"My transcript says BIO 19. My biology GE is done, right?"

Our credit is a biology course. Cal-GETC disagrees.

1

RCCD: BIO 19, 3 units, RCCD GE Area 5. credit

2

Cal-GETC: 3 units, Area 5A and 5C. physical, not 5B

3

Admission: 4 CSU units; 2.6 UC units.

4

Varies: Davis ESP 010 at any score; Irvine and UCSD course credit at 4 or 5. check campus

Verdict: Cal-GETC still needs a biological science (5B).

The lab (5C) is covered. The life science is not. Same exam, three different unit counts: 3 at RCCD and Cal-GETC, 4 at CSU, 2.6 at UC.

RCCD 2026-27 Catalog, AP Credit page, both tabs; CSU External Exam Credit; UC Davis, Irvine, and San Diego AP pages. Catalog: Cal-GETC credit "is not always the same area or units ... as our own equivalent course would receive."

Real case 3 · Different counselors, different answers

English, score 3, UCLA and Berkeley Mechanical Engineering

Counselor A

Reviewed every exam and both targets. Kept him in ENGL C1000. The note says why: "not all UCs accept a score of 3."

Counselor B, a month later

Advised a W from ENGL C1000 and submitted an ENGL C1003 prerequisite validation using AP.

1

RCCD: ENGL C1000. credit

2

Cal-GETC: 3 units, Area 1A. clears

3

Admission: 5.3 UC units. units only

4

UCLA and Berkeley Engineering: a 3 clears Entry-Level Writing only. Comp needs a 4. no comp

Counselor A was right, and wrote down why.

Read the last note before you change the plan. If you disagree, talk to the counselor or bring it to Nick. A W stays on the student's record.

Both were drop-ins. UCLA at 3: "Unassigned" credit; ENGCOMP 3 at 4-5. Berkeley Engineering at 3: "Entry Level Writing Requirement only"; Reading and Composition "A" at 4 or 5. UCLA AP page; Berkeley Engineering exams page, read 11/3/26.

CSU case · US Government

US Government, score 4, headed to a CSU

"My AP Gov covers American Institutions, so I'm done with that whole requirement."

The footnote almost everyone misses.

1

RCCD: POLS C1000, 3 units, Area 4. credit

2

Cal-GETC Area 4, plus CSU US-2. not US-3

3

Admission: 3 CSU units.

4

US-3 is a CSU-wide requirement. Plan the course for any campus.

Verdict: the student still owes California state and local government (US-3).

Our chart says it plainly: this exam "does not satisfy the CSU US-3 graduation requirement in California state and local government." Pair it with US History for US-1, and plan the US-3 course. Same answer at a 3, 4, or 5.

Condensed from the UC campus AP pages and the RCCD catalog, read 11/3/26. Verify the campus row before advising. Irvine, UCSB, and Riverside are more generous at a 3 on some exams.

What good looks like

The note that protects the student, and you.

Students change majors and schools. The note shows what was discussed, when, and why.

Before you accept auto-awarded AP or file an AP prerequisite appeal

AP shows up on the RCCD transcript, in STAC, and in EduNav. Have the four-checks conversation first. Then record why you approved or denied the appeal.

What we found this fall

AP

↓

What we want

AP Calc AB 3 (all exams/scores listed). Goal: UC Berkeley, Neuroscience (L&S). RCCD: MATH C2210. Cal-GETC Area 2. UC: 2.6 units. ASSIST: only Calc BC 5 satisfies Math 51. Advised: take MATH C2210; no AP prereq validation for C2220. Student agreed.

Every exam and score. Every campus, college, and major discussed. What each check said. What you advised and why. If the student declined your advice, say that too.

Practice, in pairs

Ask first, then run the four checks. Five minutes.

A

Biology, score 3. Student wants UC Irvine as a Biological Sciences major.

Hint: Irvine treats Bio Sci majors differently from everyone else.

B

Chemistry, score 3. Pre-health, thinking UC Davis. "My chart says I got Chem 2A credit, so I'm covered for chemistry at Davis."

Hint: Davis has its own CHE 2A.

C

Spanish Language, score 3. Student wants UCLA and needs the Foreign Language requirement.

Hint: this one is good news.

Report back: what you asked first, what each of the four checks said, and what you would advise. Then the STRK note you would write.

4

questions, every time.

If you remember three things

Admission units are not major prep.

RCCD, Cal-GETC, admission, and major prep are four separate answers. A 3 is usually units-only at the UC. When in doubt, take the course here.

Ask first. Clear nothing until all four checks are done.

Exams and scores, every target campus and college, the major, and any grad or professional school plans.

Write it down, including why.

Every exam, every campus and major discussed, what each check said, what you advised. Hard cases go to Nick, and the note says so.

Desk card with the four checks, the decision tree, and the links is in the shared folder and on Canvas. Recording goes out to all counselors Thursday.
